A Parent’s Guide to Dance and Gymnastics Attire

If you’re new to the world of dance or gymnastics, one of the first questions you’re likely asking is: What should my child wear to class? At Tapio School, we believe that the right attire helps kids feel confident, safe, and ready to move. Whether your child is just starting or leveling up to a more advanced class, this blog will explore what they need to feel prepared and shine in every leap, twirl, and cartwheel.

Why Dress Code Matters

Dance and gymnastics may seem like pure fun, but they also require discipline, structure, and focus. The proper clothing helps:

  • Ensure safety and freedom of movement
  • Support proper technique
  • Minimize distractions in class
  • Create a sense of belonging and professionalism

Let’s break it down by class type and dance style so you can shop or prepare confidently.

Dance Class Attire

For Ballet and Combo Classes:

Ballet has a more traditional dress code to promote alignment and elegance.

We recommend:

  • Solid-colored leotard (black or pink are most common)
  • Pink ballet tights
  • Pink leather or canvas ballet shoes
  • Hair pulled back into a bun or tight ponytail

Optional:

  • Ballet skirts for younger dancers (check with the studio on skirt policies)
  • Wrap sweaters or shrugs during colder months

Avoid loose or baggy clothes—form-fitting attire helps instructors see your child’s alignment and give proper corrections.

For Jazz, Tap, or Hip-Hop:

These styles allow for more freedom and personality while still being functional.

Recommended:

  • Leotard or fitted dance top
  • Dance shorts or leggings
  • Appropriate shoes:
    • Jazz shoes for jazz class
    • Tap shoes for tap
    • Clean sneakers for hip-hop (studio-only shoes)

Hair should still be tied back away from the face. Accessories like hats or props are sometimes used but always check with the teacher first.

Gymnastics Class Attire

Gymnastics focuses on flexibility, strength, and movement across mats and equipment. The goal here is zero distractions and maximum mobility.

Recommended:

  • Leotard (sleeveless or short sleeves preferred)
  • Fitted gym shorts or leggings (no buttons or zippers)
  • Bare feet (no shoes or socks)

Hair should be securely tied back. Avoid any jewelry, watches, or dangly hair accessories. These can be both distracting and potentially unsafe during flips and rolls.

For Preschool-Age Students

We love our littlest dancers and gymnasts! For them, comfort and simplicity are key.

Recommended:

  • Comfy leotard or unitard
  • Dance tights or leggings
  • Ballet shoes or barefoot (depending on class)

For toddlers, easy-to-remove layers are great for potty breaks, and parents should label shoes and clothing in case of mix-ups.

Cleanliness & Care Tips

  • Label everything – Especially shoes and water bottles!
  • Keep shoes clean – Dance shoes should be worn only indoors.
  • Wash regularly – Use a gentle detergent for leotards and tights.
  • Hair should be neat – Flyaways can be distracting (and get in the eyes mid-turn).

Bonus tip: Keep an “extras” bag with backup tights, hair ties, and a water bottle.

Where to Shop

Tapio School of Dance and Gymnastics families often ask where to buy dance and gymnastics attire. Here are a few trusted sources:

  • Local dancewear stores – Great for fittings and studio-specific items
  • Discount Dance Supply – Online go-to with a wide variety
  • Amazon – Convenient for basics (check reviews for sizing)
  • Target/Walmart – Budget-friendly for young beginners

We also recommend checking with your child’s instructor or our front desk for studio-specific uniform requirements.

Encouraging Confidence Through Dress

At the end of the day, the goal is to make your child feel confident, comfortable, and excited to participate. Wearing the “uniform” of dancers and gymnasts helps them step into class with pride and purpose. And when kids feel good in what they wear, they’re more likely to try new things, push themselves, and have fun.
